CREDENTIALS

Oldest know non-photo credential and business card case. Issued to Federal Probation Officer Edward L. Hanna, 1931. Found and photographed during research at PPSO. Item now missing.

Edward L. Hanna (1931 – 1965) was appointed as the first U.S. Probation Officer in the Western District of New York, by Chief U.S. District Judge Knight. SEE: History of Probation & NYWP | Western District of New York

Hanna was eventually appointed to Chief U.S. Probation Officer until he retired in 1965.

Business card. Hanna served as a Lieutenant Commander in the Coast Guard Reserves and then became a U.S. Deputy Marshal.

Oldest know photo credential. Badge and credential issued to Joseph E. Lewis (Indiana Northern) on January 1, 1935. This is not the badge that would have been issued when the officer was appointed. Made by C.D. Reese, New York, the badge is customized with the officer’s name. The Department of Justice holder displays Mr. Lewis’s chief credential.

Credential of Officer from Southern District of Alabama. Appointed in 1966 and retired in 1986. A now retired Chief U.S. Probation Officer administered the officers estate after his death on September 1,  2016. Two sets of credentials were eventually donated to the museum.

SUSPO at left observed his badge seemed to get more response than the credentials. He attached the badge to the cardboard ID holder, which resulted in immediate attention. ​​​​​​​
