PATCHES

Seal of the U.S. Probation and Pretrial Services Museum, featuring a balance scale, an open book with laurel branches, a shield with stars and stripes, and symbols of a quill, a key, and a sword.

Example needed for Museum. A former Deputy Chief U.S. Probation Officer (District of Nevada) stated: another staff person initiated the patch in the late 1970s or early 1980s. 3" patch designed by retired Chief U.S. Probation Officer District of Utah. Silk screened, not embroidered. Designed to be sewn on baseball trucker type hats. Few were produced. History courtesy of now retired Supervisory U.S. Probation Officer.

2 1/4" patch. Used on baseball type trucker caps in the late 1980s and early 1990s. Manufactured by Commercial Emblem Company , a woman owed business which was established in 1972 and is now defunct.

3" patch. Designed by Senior U.S. Probation Officer and U.S. Probation Officer Eastern District of New York. Produced in 1990 by an unknown manufacturer. Believed to be the first EDNY patch. Only 100 patches were produced.

Patch designed by U.S. Probation Officer Eastern District of New York . Produced in 1992 by an unknown manufacturer. The five large white stars reflect the five counties that EDNY encompasses: Queens, Kings (Brooklyn), Staten Island, Nassau, and Suffolk. The smaller blue stars represent the number of officers that EDNY had at the time.

Patch designed by three U.S. Probation Officers Eastern District of New York. The style/shape of the patch was reflective of the patches that the NYPD uses for several of their specialized units (ESU, Scuba, etc). Produced in the 1990s by an unknown manufacturer.

Patch designed by U.S. Probation Officer, Eastern District of New York. Produced in the 1990’s by an unknown manufacturer. The district had two softball teams. One played in Brooklyn and the other on Long Island. The Long Island team played in a league of civil servants from Nassau County (court officers, sheriff's office, child protective services, Nassau City probation etc.).

Badge patch designed by U.S. Probation Officer, Eastern District of New York. Based on the badge still in use in the district. Colors were modified to make the patch more legible. Produced in the 1990s by an unknown manufacturer.

4" patch. Believed to have been made in 1992 after the Northern District of Georgia completed search team training at FLETC Glynco, Brunswick, GA. Purchased at Sally’s Cop Shop, just off campus of FLETC Glynco.

3 1/2" patch of the U.S. Great Seal, superimposed on the flag of the state of Arizona. Designed by a now retired U.S. Probation Officer in 1994. Personal purchase, with less than 300 originals made. Additional 50 made by the Chief for a district-wide meeting. Pre-internet design was sketched and mailed to Advantage Emblem Inc., Duluth, MN, which was started in 1994.

4" patch. Designed in 1999 by Mental Health Treatment Specialist, Southern District of New York. The patch shows a partial skyline of New York, including the Twin Towers. 

3 1/2" patch. Unknown date or manufacturer. Designed by now retired Intensive Supervision Specialist District of Montana. The patch uses the Arizona state flag in the background. The USPO was not aware of this was the state flag but liked the design. The officer has the distinction of designing three patches, tied with a retired U.S. Probation Officer Southern District of Ohio.

3 1/2" patch of unknown age. Patch was part of a collection in Australia. Interesting construction. Not so old to have a "cheesecloth" backing, but it also does not have a modern heat sealed plastic backing.  

4 ½" patch. Inspired by an outline from retired Probation Administrator, PPSO, in a firearms instructor newsletter in the late 1990s. In 1999, Chief U.S. Probation Officer, District of Idaho, while a SUSPO in the Western District of Washington, worked with J.R. Printing, Seattle, WA, (now defunct) on the design that was limited to a run of 50 laser cut iron-on patches.

3 X 3 ½" patch by U.S. Probation Officer, District of Montana from 2000. The patch signifies the rich Irish heritage in the western part of the state. The "M" and the hill in the foreground represent Mt. Jumbo in Missoula and the University of Montana in Missoula. The mountain in the background represents the Rattlesnake mountains. The "river" represents the Clark Fork, which runs through Missoula. The year 1925 was placed on the patch to represent the year of the Federal Probation Act.

Patch image provided in 2004 by manufacturer, A-B EMBLEM.  This curator was looking for a vendor to produce a patch while in the District of Utah.  Notice the black background versus the blue background on the patch donated by U.S. Pretrial Chief, Southern District of California.  The black patch was most likely never produced any further than a discarded sample.

Rare patch courtesy Pretrial Chief, Southern District of California.  She designed the patch in 2002, and was inspired by the USMS who added palm trees to their logo to reflect a "San Diego" touch.  The patches were used on district polo shirts. Patch names main office of San Diego.  At the time, the El Centro Office was mainly staffed by officers from San Diego, therefore, it was not cost effective to modify the patch. In the foreground is Delicate Arch, located in Arches National Park, which represents the southern part of the district.
